These are more commonly known as insoles and some people also mistakenly refer to them as 'orthotics'. (Orthotics is the science of using insoles to help remedy biomechanical problems).
Address foot compensations When the relationship of the foot to the ground is less than ideal, the foot will compensate (see Biomechanics Guide) and this has a 'knock on' effect all the way up the body, frequently causing pain. So insoles or orthoses are intended to put the foot in a better position in relation to the ground, and so take away the need for the foot to compensate. These types of insoles are said to be 'functional foot orthoses' (insoles) because they are intended to alter the way in which the foot and the rest of the body functions during gait (walking).

Many shops and websites advertise and sell insoles to go in shoes. These are unlikely to do any harm but equally may not do much good because they might not address your specific problem. If they do not, you could be wasting your money. The insoles supplied to you by Mercury Biomechanics are semi-custom orthoses designed and made specifically for you. They will only be made for you after a 'history' (see Consultations) has been taken and a thorough static and dynamic examination has been made. They are therefore not a 'one size fits all' product.
