How can insoles help?

Functional Foot Orthoses (insoles)
When the relationship of the foot to the ground is less than ideal, the foot has to compensate. This has a 'knock on' effect all the way up the body, frequently causing pain. Insoles are designed to remove the need for compensation, by putting the foot in a better relationship to the ground.

These types of insoles are said to be 'functional foot orthoses' because they are intended to alter the way in which the foot, and the rest of the body, functions during gait (walking). They are sometimes mistakenly called orthotics. (Orthotics is the science of using insoles to remedy biomechanical problems).

Other types of insoles

Accommodative / Cushioning
Some people need an insole that provides cushioning and pressure relief. This may be in addition to, or instead of, insoles which alter foot function. For example, as people get older their feet sometimes lose the natural fibro-fatty padding over the balls of their feet which means their feet become very sore in that area. They need insoles designed to cushion and deflect pressure away from those areas.

Insoles which only provide cushioning can be made; or pressure relief can be incorporated into functional foot orthoses.

How will I know which type of insole I need?
You will be given advice about which types of insoles will be best for you, or your child, and the options available.

'Off the Shelf' insoles
Ready made insoles are commonly available but may not help much because they might not fully address your specific problem, or they may be designed for a completely different foot type to yours. The insoles supplied to you by Mercury Biomechanics will be tailored to your specific prescription. They will only be made for you after a 'history' (see Consultations) has been taken and a thorough static and dynamic examination has been made. They are therefore not a 'one size fits all' product..
