To help diagnose any problems, you'll be asked questions such as:
It is worth giving some thought to these type of questions before you come for your consultation.
After a thorough 'history' has been obtained you will be examined on a couch. Alignment of your feet, legs, pelvis and rest of body will be checked as well as the range, direction and quality of movement in the joints of your legs and feet.
Further examination will be carried out with you standing, then you will be asked to walk and if relevant, to run on the treadmill. While you are on the treadmill, your walking pattern (or 'gait') may be captured by video camera for analysis on a computer. You will be shown the video afterwards.
You will be told afterwards what the examination revealed and what seems to be your problem. What can be done about it will be discussed with you. Quite often the remedy will involve changing footwear, wearing specially made insoles in your shoes, and/or exercises to strengthen or increase the flexibility of your muscles. If it is felt that you need to consult anyone else such as a surgeon or physiotherapist, you will be given advice about this too. If you need insoles, measurements of your foot will be taken and you will be asked to book another appointment in about a week's time to come and have your insoles fitted. You will be seen again after you have received your insoles so that their fit and the effect on your problem can be checked.
