What Happens at a Consultation ?

Your History
To help diagnose any problems, you'll be asked questions such as:
  • How long have you had the problem?
  • What makes it worse?
  • Does anything make it better (such as rest, cold, certain types of shoe, etc)?
  • At which time of day is it worse eg first thing on rising, or at the end of the day?
  • It is worth giving some thought to these type of questions before you come for your consultation.

    Examination
After a thorough 'history' has been obtained the alignment of your feet, legs, pelvis and rest of body will be checked; as well as the Insoles, direction and quality of movement in the joints of your legs and feet.

    Gait Analysis
Examination will be carried out with you standing, walking, and if relevant, running on the treadmill. On the treadmill, your walking pattern (or 'gait') can be videoed for analysis on a computer. You will be shown the video afterwards.

    Diagnosis & Next Steps
The diagnosis and treatment options will be discussed with you. Quite often the remedy will involve changing footwear, wearing specially made insoles in your shoes, and/or exercises to strengthen or increase the flexibility of your muscles. If it is felt that you need to consult anyone else such as a surgeon or physiotherapist, you will be given advice about this too. If you need insoles, measurements of your foot will be taken and you will be asked to book another appointment in about a week's time to come and have your insoles fitted. You will be seen again after you have received your insoles so that their fit and the effect on your problem can be checked.

The Frequently Asked Questions should answer any questions you may have about the initial consultation, such as what to wear and what to bring with you. If they don't, please Contact Us.
